Since the first treatments hit the market over 20 years ago, erectile dysfunction drugs have become a multi-billion dollar industry. There are many treatments available, and as options have shifted from doctors-only to online and mail-order services, two emerging leaders are BlueChew and Hims.
Both companies offer several different ED treatments and a similar business model, but what exactly are the differences between BlueChew and Hims, and which one might be right for you?
To start an order with BlueChew requires going to their website. There you will select a preferred drug and plan and complete a medical profile form. The questions cover basic information about your age and health, as well as more specific information that helps their doctors ensure that BlueChew’s medications will be safe for you.
You will also need to send them a photo of you holding a photo ID to verify your identity. Most medical checkups only take 1-2 days, and after that you’ll get a supply of pills sent monthly. You can also choose to have your prescriptions filled at a compounding pharmacy near you.
The ordering and viewing process for Hims is very similar to that of BlueChew. The main difference is that after completing the form on the His website, you can get an immediate consultation by video, phone or online chat with a doctor. Once they find the right medication for you, they will write a prescription that you can use to order from the Hims site or take to your local or favorite mail order pharmacy.
As of this writing, BlueChew offers each of its three products in four levels: active, busy, popular and pro. Tiers for sildenafil and tadalafil are priced at $20, $30, $50, and $90 per month, but you get different amounts of each drug at each tier. With sildenafil, you get six pills with the active plan, 10 with the busy plan, 17 for the popular plan, and 34 on the pro level. Monthly supplies for tadalafil are 4, 7, 14 or 28 tablets, and with vardenafil you get 4, 8, 15 or 30 tablets – priced at $20, $35, $65 and $120 per month – depending on the plan you choose.
Hims Product Pricing will vary depending on your dosage, and whether you order from the site or have the prescription sent to another pharmacy. Costs will range from a few dollars per pill to almost $1,000 for a monthly supply of a brand name erectile dysfunction drug.
BlueChew does not offer any products other than sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenafil chewable tablets. These are the generic equivalents of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.
Hims offers products covering a range of needs beyond erectile dysfunction. Sertraline and paroxetine are offered to treat premature ejaculation, as well as Sildenafil PE and a topical treatment available as a spray or wipe. They also offer generic valacyclovir to treat genital herpes.
Alongside their erectile dysfunction treatments, Hims sells spray and liquid versions of finasteride and minoxidil, two drugs used to help prevent hair loss. They also offer minoxidil foam and special thickening shampoo and conditioner.
Recently, Hims has expanded its offering to include a range of skin care products. They include anti-aging, moisturizing, and anti-wrinkle creams as well as a vitamin C serum, skin cleanser, and SPF 50+ sunscreen. A custom formula gel-cream is also available to treat acne.
BlueChew has been in business since 2014 and has earned an A+ rating from Better Business Bureau. Most customer complaints seem to be related to shipping issues.
Hims has been available since 2017 – and parent company Hims & Hers, Inc. – benefits from the same BBB A+ rating that BlueChew does. Unlike BlueChew, however, there are plenty of negative reports Hims customers unhappy with canceled or delayed appointments or persistent charges for medications they don’t want.
Both BlueChew and Hims take several steps to ensure that your medical information is kept private. They are linked by the same HIPAA laws like any other healthcare professional, so all consultations are as confidential as in-office discussions. Both companies also ship their products in plain packaging, ensuring your privacy.
As of this writing, BlueChew has very few customer reviews available online other than the shiny on their own website. Three people submitted opinions to the Better Business Bureau site, with two giving Blue Chew 1 out of 5 stars and the other rating the company 5 out of 5. The three customers who reviewed BlueChew on Trustpilot gave identical ratings.
Hims has a lot more customer reviews online, but they’re mixed. In our last review of the site, all 59 people who submitted reviews to the Better Business Bureau site gave Hims just 1.13 out of 5 stars. This stands in stark contrast to their score of 4.3/5 at Trustpilotalthough 12% of over 1,000 reviewers gave only one star.
The main competitor of Hims and BlueChew is Roman. Roman sells generic and brand name Viagra and Cialis as well as other products to treat hair loss, genital herpes, low testosterone, allergies, eczema and excessive sweating. They also sell dandruff shampoo and premature ejaculation treatments, which makes Roman much more similar to Hims than BlueChew. While Hims and BlueChew ship monthly, Roman offers monthly and quarterly options. Like Hims, Roman began selling to the public in 2017.
How to choose between BlueChew and Hims?
If you have other conditions that you want to treat, such as hair loss or skin issues, you might want to give Hims a try as they have a much wider range of products. If you live in North Dakota or South Carolina, the choice is made for you since only Hims products are available in these two states. If you have trouble swallowing pills whole, BlueChew chewable tablets might be best for you. BlueChew will also be cheaper for most ED treatment options.
Do you need a prescription to use BlueChew or Hims?
You do not need to bring a prescription to BlueChew or Hims to purchase their products. With both services, you will have an online consultation with a doctor who will write a prescription that you can fill on their site or at a pharmacy of your choice. With BlueChew, you will need to use a compounding pharmacy.
