- One form of “natural viagra” is arginine, which is an amino acid that increases blood flow.
- Horny Goat Weed is a herb that inhibits the enzyme PDE5which is also how viagra works.
- You can also try other remedies that help with blood circulation, such as red ginseng, beets, etc.
Erectile dysfunction (difficulty getting or keeping an erection) is the most common sexual health problem who brings men to their doctors.
The risk of ED increases by approximately 10% per decade of age: This means that 20% of people aged 20, 50% of people aged 50 and 70% of people aged 70 suffer from erectile dysfunction.
Many of these people turn to drugs like Viagra to help them get and stay hard. But prescription erectile dysfunction drugs have side effects including headaches, stuffy noses, and indigestion that can cause people to seek out natural alternatives.
Here are the supplements and other natural treatments that could help treat your erectile dysfunction.
Important: erectile dysfunction can be a sign of a serious illness, including heart disease and diabetic neuropathy. If you have erectile dysfunction, it’s important to talk to your doctor to rule out serious health issues and determine if you’re healthy enough to have sex. Dr Peter StahlDirector of Male Reproductive and Sexual Medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center
Speak to your doctor before starting any of the supplements below.
Arginine (or l-arginine) is an amino acid found in animal products, beans and whole grains. Several studies have consistently shown that it can significantly improve ED, making it one of the most commonly used natural viagra alternatives.
Arginine increases levels of nitric oxide (NO), a compound that triggers muscle relaxation, allowing increased blood flow to the penis. which increased blood flow allows an erectionsaid Dr Deborah Matthewpractitioner at Signature Wellness,
How to use it: A medical exam found that doses of 1500mg to 5000mg of arginine were effective in treating erectile dysfunction. Arginine supplements are generally safe, Matthew says, but may pose a risk for people with heart disease, low blood pressure or herpes.
2. Horny goat weed
Horny Goat Weed refers to a family of herbs called epimedium. It has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine to treat sexual health issues in both men and women.
Modern research suggests that icariin, a component of horny goat weed, inhibits production of the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), Stahl says. This allows for more NO and stronger erections.
This mimics some of the effects of first-line prescription treatments for erectile dysfunction – including Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and Stendra – which are also PDE5 inhibitors.
How to use it: Horny goat weed can be taken in daily doses of 2000 mg. Or, you can take 3000-4000mg 90 minutes before having sex.
If you have cardiovascular disease or estrogen-sensitive health conditions like breast cancer, don’t take horny goat weed, Stahl says.
“Beets are like nature’s Viagra,” says Matthew. They work in three ways:
- Increase NO levels: Studies on consume beet juice Where take a beetroot juice supplement found that both can increase NO levels for better blood flow.
- Reduce blood pressure: Beet juice can also reduce blood pressure, according to a 2022 medical journal. Men with high blood pressure are twice as likely have ED.
- Boost your athletic performance: The raise of NO level of beets can also help you last longer during sex by increasing your athletic endurance.
So while there haven’t been any specific studies on beet juice and erectile dysfunction, it’s likely to have benefits, Matthew says.
4. Red ginseng
Red ginseng, also known as Asian ginseng, is a root used to treat erectile dysfunction in traditional Chinese medicine.
Modern research and small studies show that men who take red ginseng may have a stronger libido and fewer erectile problems compared to men who took a placebo.
For example, a 2012 study of 119 men who took 1400 mg of red ginseng daily for eight weeks had slightly less erectile dysfunction than men who took a placebo.
How to use it: Stahl recommends taking a dose of 600 to 1,000 mg of red ginseng each day. Do not try this if you are taking:
- Anti coagulants
- Blood pressure medicine
- insulin for diabetes
- Immune system suppressors
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)
5. Tribulus terrestris
Tribulus Terrestris is an herb that has shown promise for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, possibly because it affects NO levels.
A 2017 study on the subject of tribulus terrestris and ED examined 180 men and found that those who took six 250 mg doses of tribulus terrestris daily for 12 weeks had increased sexual satisfaction and lower rates of erectile dysfunction than men who took a placebo. The study found no adverse side effects.
How to use it: The men in the study took six 250 mg doses a day, but there is no FDA-approved dose for tribulus terrestris. Talk to your doctor about what’s right for you.
Do not take tribulus terrestris if you are taking medicines for diabetes or high blood pressure, or if you are taking diuretics or clopidogrel, a medicine that treats cardiovascular disease.
Psychological and emotional problems such as stress, relationship problems or anxiety can cause erectile dysfunction or make things worse. In these cases, therapy is a helpful natural treatment, Stahl says.
A small 2020 study found that cognitive behavioral sex therapy helped treat erectile dysfunction. Other types of therapy may also be beneficial, Stahl says.
“Couples therapy, sex therapy, or cognitive behavioral therapy can be effective,” he says.
How to use it: Contact a qualified mental health provider who has experience with people with erectile dysfunction. At the same time, try using the erection confidence app to reduce performance anxiety and help you have better sex.
Dealing with erectile dysfunction can be frustrating and embarrassing, but it’s very common. It’s always important to talk to your doctor if you have erectile dysfunction, as it can be a sign of serious health conditions like cardiovascular disease or diabetic neuropathy.
While over-the-counter medications are effective in treating erectile dysfunction, there are also options for people looking for a natural alternative to Viagra. Herbal supplements work similarly to Viagra and other medications, but by increasing nitric oxide levels to increase blood flow to the penis. They are safe in most cases, but not for everyone.
The first step to finding a natural treatment for erectile dysfunction is to talk to your doctor. Although the conversation may be uncomfortable, it is a conversation doctors have heard many times before. Plus, talking can help you have a healthy sex life for years to come.
“Men don’t have to suffer in silence,” says Matthew. “Help is available, and in many cases libido and erection problems can be safely and effectively resolved.”
