The National Drug Authority (NDA) said it has suspended the production and distribution of alcoholic products sold under the “Stronger Weekend” brand because of their Viagra content.

Viagra, an erectile dysfunction drug, is a highly restricted prescription drug, according to the NDA.

Speaking to reporters in Kampala on Wednesday, Dr. James William Tamale, head of the NDA’s regional offices, said products that bear Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) quality marks pose serious health threats consumers. But the UNBS said it was not within its mandate to assess the medical claims.

He said that viagra adulterated alcoholic products produced by Thembomar Investment in Kasese district are sold as “Weekend Pineapple Even Stronger Table Wine” and “Weekend Stronger Opaque Beer”. strong”.

“NDA has undertaken a laboratory analysis of samples of ‘Strongest Weekend Pineapple Still Table Wine’ collected from the market and the results have confirmed that the product is adulterated with Sildenafil Citrate. [Viagra]said Dr. Tamale.

He said that following the adulteration signal, their team and police raided the Mpondwe factory on February 1 and collected the product (wine) along with other samples of the beer that was also “tested positive for sildenafil citrate”. [Viagra].”

“Sildenafil citrate has serious side effects including extreme abdominal complications, respiratory and heart problems, kidney failure, sometimes leading to coma and even death,” Dr. Tamale said.

“The public is strongly cautioned against using the stronger weekend products and direct bars, guest houses, shops, supermarkets and general merchandise stores to stop the sale or stockpiling of this product with immediate effect,” he added.

Ms Sylvia Kirabo, spokeswoman for UNBS, said they had not yet received any official communication from the NDA regarding the product, adding that it was not their mandate to test or regulate drugs.

“We don’t have any official communication from NDA regarding the products. When we have that information, we will be able to respond,” she said.

“UNBS deals with product safety, not therapeutic issues and medicinal claims. This falls outside the mandates of the Office,” Ms. Kirabo added.

One of Thembomar Investment’s managers, who identified himself as Bosco, said: “The products are made from Congo and we only distribute. Its main branch is in Kasese. He denied the NDA’s report that the products contain Viagra.

Last year, the regulator also detected coffee containing Viagra sold under the M-Magix Coffee brand.
