FDA finds traces of Viagra in honey products

It’s time to check your honey.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found unlisted traces of tadalafil (Cialis) and sildenafil (Viagra) in several consumer honey products. The agency has issued warnings to four companies for adding prescription erectile dysfunction drugs to honey supplements intended for sexual enhancement. The sale of products marketed as foods containing active medicinal ingredients is against federal law.

“These undeclared ingredients may interact with nitrates found in some prescription medications, such as nitroglycerin, and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels,” the FDA said in a press release.

People with heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol often take nitrates to treat their conditions. The American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) released a joint statement stating that patients taking nitrates should not be given sildenafil.

The FDA has performed laboratory analysis of various honey products marketed as natural ways to boost libido. The products were manufactured and sold by four companies: Thirstyrun (also known as US Royal Honey), MKS Enterprise, Shopaax.com and 1am USA Incorporated dba Pleasure Products USA. All companies have received a written warning from the FDA and have 15 business days to respond.

Judy McMeekin, PharmD, associate commissioner for regulatory affairs at the FDA, says unidentified ingredients in products can be dangerous and deadly to consumers.

“Contaminated honey products like these are dangerous because consumers are likely unaware of the risks associated with the hidden ingredients of prescription drugs in these products and how they can interact with other drugs and supplements they can take,” Dr. McMeekin said in an FDA statement. Press release.

Although supposedly recommended for centuries, honey has not been shown in randomized clinical trials to have libido-increasing properties.
