Bring back the fun: the world’s first soft surfing series comes to SoCal

SAN CLEMENTE, CA – If you’ve ever surfed a foam board – and had fun doing it – this event might be for you.

The Red Bull Foam Wreckers, the world’s first softboard series, took to the water at 9 a.m. on Saturday in San Clemente. With competitors ranging from beginners to professionals, the goal of the so-called “anti-surf contest” is to have as much fun as possible using only foam surfboards.

“We’re judging by how much fun you have in the water, as well as the things you do,” said Jamie O’Brien, a professional surfer and event creator. “You could win this contest by doing a hobby, lying on the board on your side.

“There are no rules for this competition. It’s just going out, having a good time, making the judges laugh.

And that doesn’t just happen anywhere. The Red Bull Foam Wreckers series takes place on the iconic T-Street Beach.

“It’s an amazing place, Southern California, an amazing place,” said O’Brien. “San Clemente, to me, is like the surfing mecca of California. It’s not Huntington. San Clemente is the zero point for surfing in Southern California.

O’Brien hopes the event will remind children and adults of the purpose of sport – to simply have fun.

“If you are on this quest for your child to be a world champion, maybe this is a good wake-up call,” he said. “Like, ‘Hey, let’s just remember that surfing is about fun.’ Yeah, it’s cool if it becomes a job one day but still, I always feel like I come back to your heart and remind myself why you started the sport.

Anyone over 16 is invited to participate with the boards provided.
