ATLANTA — Police are working around the clock to make sure you’re safe when you go out this summer.
It’s part of Atlanta’s summer safety program to fight crime in city parks.

“We rolled out our summer plan,” said the Atlanta Police Department Sgt. John Chafee said Channel 2’s Larry Spruill. “We focused on the crime issues that we have across the city.”
It’s a plan that Chafee says works.
Recently, officers from the Area 6 Crime Unit teamed up with the ODA Gang Unit to address issues in the Fourth Ward and Edgewood area.
“During this period they made a number of arrests,” Chafee said. “They arrested someone who was wanted for stealing a package from a porch in Midtown. Then we arrested a convicted felon with a gun and narcotics on him.
Chafee said the arrest of 36-year-old Darryl Swain happened at Butler Park.
Detectives said Swain was known to have gang ties and said he also had cocaine on him.
According to Chafee, officers also arrested Laron Lowe, 57, for possession of Adderall, morphine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, Viagra, Xanax, codeine pills and 49 grams of marijuana.
“We want to make sure that our parks, especially during the summer period, … are safe,” Chafee said. “It’s a place where our communities feel safe to go out and bring their kids, hang out and enjoy the city parks. What we saw in our app – the activity at Butler Park – was the illegal sale of narcotics in and around the park.
Channel 2 recently reported how officers are stepping up their bike patrols in Area 1.
They roam the area in an effort to show more visibility.
This is another effort to stop crime throughout the city, especially in city parks.
“I think one of the attractions is that there are great people who frequent these parks. There will be activities going on there that will attract a lot of people,” Chafee said.
But they want everyone to know, they’re watching.

“We want to make sure we are tackling crime issues across our city. We want our communities to feel safe. We want to make sure we stay ahead of any crime trends that we might see,” he said.
The APD also arrested Kwanza Johnson, 47, for possession of cocaine, Marvin Wilson, 64, for possession of cocaine and Jarius Anderson, 43, for selling marijuana.
He was charged with intentional possession of marijuana and possession of schedule two drugs.
Three citations were issued for possession of marijuana and one person was arrested for driving with a suspended license.
